What are the Functions of Motherboards Audio Ports?

What are the functions of all motherboards audio ports? Well, the answer is simple. Their main job is to connect all the audio devices such as speakers, microphones, headphones & other audio devices to the motherboard and then allow the motherboard to communicate with these devices.

The motherboard of our computers can contain different types of audio ports. Sometimes it is confusing to understand what functions each of them offers. Luckily, we have done the difficult & confusing part for you. You Can also check the Best Micro ATX Motherboard.

In this article, we have talked about everything you need to understand the functions of the audio ports. We have discussed what types they are, how to identify them, what functions they offer & so on. Without further delay, LET’S GET TO IT!

The Functions of all Motherboard Audio Ports

Now, all motherboard audio ports have different functions. First, you must know what type of audio ports your motherboard contains. No matter which PC you are using these days, there will always be three most common audio ports on your motherboard. They are: line out, mic in & line in.

1. Line Out (Green) port:

It is the most basic audio port you need. Its colour is mostly green or a bit lime you could say as well. The main job it has is to connect the headphones or speakers. As it connects the output devices it is known as a line out port. Also check the Best Motherboards For Overclocking.

It mainly uses two ring plugs & the plug is divided into three sections such as Right, Sleeve & Left. Therefore, to use your headphones or speakers you must plug the audio cable into the line out port.

2. Mic In (Pink) Port:

Just like its name, this one is used to connect a microphone. It is pink in colour and has an amplifier. So, if you have a microphone whether it is with a headset or it is a standalone you should connect the cable to the pink port.

3. Line In (Blue) Port:

Another type of port is the blue or line-in port. When we use our computers we have to use many external audio devices. Like CD players, MP3 players, soundcards & other musical instruments. The blue port is used to connect these devices.

Points to be Noted:

  • These three common ports are also known as audio jacks.
  • They are usually 3.5mm wide sockets.
  • Your motherboard might contain them in black colour & have notations beside to identify easily.

These three were the most common & basic audio ports on our motherboard. However, there are a couple of more audio ports out there. Sometimes you might find Black, Orange or Grey Audio ports. They are used to connect different surround speakers such as 5.1 or 7.1 ones. Some computers also have different digital ports as well.

4. Black Audio Port:

The black ones are the rear ports & they are used for rear speakers.

5. Orange Audio Port:

It is used for other types of surround sound such as subwoofer or centre.

6. Grey Audio Port:

The motherboards which have 6 audio jacks will have grey ports. They are used for side speakers.

7. Digital Audio Ports:

Different types of digital audio ports are found in different computers. Instead of having a rear jack or a side jack they have a Sony/Philips Digital Interface mostly known as a S/PDIF connector. These kinds of digital audio ports simply allow us to send sound without any background noise. It also does not convert the digital sound to analog sound as well. That is why they provide better quality.
